چکیده

Executive Summary: Studies of the nature of the first galaxies, and of the processes that led to their assembly and buildup, are of compelling importance. Not only did the first generation of galaxies likely reionize the universe, but they also were the seeds for the diverse population of today’s galaxies and the massive black holes that reside in them. Star formation in the first galaxies was likely very different than at later times, with different feedback processes dominating and early galaxies hosting an early generation of primordial stars. The challenges of charactering the fascinating physical processes at work during the first hundreds of millions of years to z∼6-7 are considerable. Characterizing these galaxies in detail with observations is difficult due to their small sizes, extreme faintness and the need for sophisticated IR instruments for detection and measurement. Yet such observations are needed if our models are to be realistic. With a 30-m class GSMT, we should have the necessary spatial and spectral resolution to push to the low luminosities needed to characterize their contribution to reionization and to do detailed studies of their sizes, structure and morphologies (Figure 1). The synergies of GSMT with ALMA and JWST would enhance this field greatly.

The Epoch of Reionization: Foregrounds and Calibration With Paper

Nearly half a billion years passed between the release of the now routinely observed Comic Microwave Backrgound and the formation of the first galaxies and black holes which reionized the ubiquitous hydrogen. This Epoch of Reionization (EoR) is the next major unexplored cosmological milestone. At the current time the space between galaxies is almost completely ionized, therefor we know that the...

Local Group Dwarf Galaxies and the Contribution of the First Stars to Reionization

The Local Group contains some dwarf galaxies that apparently formed all their stars early, lost their gas to winds or ionization, and survive today as “fossils” from the epoch of reionization. This study presents new models of these objects based on the hierarchical chemical evolution framework of Tumlinson (2006). The model accurately reproduces the observed luminosity-metallicity relation of ...

Intensity mapping of molecular gas during cosmic reionization

I present a simple calculation of the expected mean CO brightness temperature from the large scale distribution of galaxies during cosmic reionization. The calculation is based on the cosmic star formation rate density required to reionize, and keep ionized, the intergalactic medium, and uses standard relationships between star formation rate, IR luminosity, and CO luminosity derived for star f...

Formation of Dwarf Galaxies during the Cosmic Reionization

We reanalyze the photoevaporation problem of subgalactic objects irradiated by ultraviolet background (UVB) radiation in a reionized universe. For the purpose, we perform three-dimensional radiation smoothed particle hydrodynamics (RSPH) calculations, in which the radiative transfer is solved by a direct method and the nonequilibrium chemistry of primordial gas including H2 molecules is also in...

Cosmic Reionization and Early Star-forming Galaxies: a Joint Analysis of New Constraints from Planck and the Hubble Space Telescope

We discuss new constraints on the epoch of cosmic reionization and test the assumption that most of the ionizing photons responsible arose from high-redshift star-forming galaxies. Good progress has been made in charting the end of reionization through spectroscopic studies of  z 6–8 QSOs, gamma-ray bursts, and galaxies expected to host Lyα emission. However, the most stringent constraints on ...
